:The Story Our Wedding Cake:

This is a story of a wedding cake ... why is it so important? Other than because it's OUR wedding (or Solemnisation - but it sounds funny) cake ...

Because ... so much work goes into a wedding cake that I felt that the story of the cake should be told, rather than admired, eaten and forgotten (after I paid so much money for it too!).

I don't really remember how I got hold of Cheryl's website, but when I went through her site, I was hooked. Hooked by her obvious passion for making wedding cakes. I enquired how much a cake will cost, and well it wasn't exactly cheap but what I did like idea of a pair of personalised wedding toppers. I thought the toppers looked really cute, and it was something different from all the Precious Moments figurines (not that I'm against Precious Moments, but almost everyone else is using it).

So the story begins ...  of The Popoheads' Wedding Cake ...

I didn't really know what I wanted, other than the personalised figurines. Cheryl was quite patient with me and thank goodness for ICQ, we were able to have discussions on various possible designs, latest trends (tilted cakes!), special figures (type of hearts, types of flowers, etc,).

Based on my favourite cake design (see the picture on the right) within her portfolio, Cheryl sketched 4 possible designs of the cake for 4 (see below), and including different types of topper made by Cheryl's partner, Lydia (see below the wedding cake designs).

We finally decided on Design #2 after much headache (we like all 4 designs so much!). We also picked Topper #3 as the type we wanted. Since we were quite decided on fruitcake as the cake, the next step was to decide on colour scheme.

Later, my friend referred me to www.cupidsdelight.com and I went crazy over this design (women are fickle minded when it comes to such things). I excitedly showed it to Cheryl and she said the design could be incorporated into my cake. So the next round of discussion with Zit Seng was which aspect of the cake we wanted to use. The main complaint from him was that the cake would look "plastic" but I thought it was a fun and happy design which would be suitable for our solemnisation dinner.

Cheryl gave me possible ideas for the cake and we finally agreed on one design. I was so excited because the cake was beginning to reflect our personalities, rather than just a nice looking cake.

A few weeks before the solemnisation, Cheryl and I begun discussing the colour scheme. She showed me this other cake design she did for a wedding before mine. It was really beautiful! She had actually crafted the butterflies by hand! I began to pester Cheryl to change the design of my cake because now I wanted the butterflies too! She was quite firm on saying no to me, not because of the time constraint, but rather because our design was a reflection of our personalities, just like the other cake was a reflection of the other couple's personalities.

I was a bit disappointed but as Cheryl shared the process of baking my wedding cake - "I'm making the flowers now", "Your bottom tier is baked!" - I became very excited again. I again started pestering Cheryl, but this time of pictures of the cake progress. Poor Cheryl! You can see the process right here :The Making of A Wedding Cake:

And so ... the final end product! The Popoheads' Wedding cake!

Yup! The top tier is safely stored in our freezer, to be taken out and savoured on 27 June 2005!

:Trivial Story 1:
Just as Cheryl was adding the finishing touches to the wedding cake before the guests enter into the dining room, she realised that the topper representing Zit Seng had its glasses MISSING! so she began a frantic search for it and finally managed to dig it out of a bag containing her stuff... then the next question was "how to put the glasses back?" they asked the banquet operations for help and they managed to get some UHU glue to stick it back .. and the topper look JUST like Zit Seng ... once again *hee*

:Trivial Story 2:
Everyone was exclaiming how much the topper looks JUST like Zit Seng, except for the side parting (he has center parting) when its picture was first shown to some friends. "OHMY! IT LOOKS SO MUCH LIKE ZIT SENG!" was the commonly heard phrase.

PS: Bet you didn't know the process of choosing a wedding cake design is so tedious and yet so fun!

PPS: I PAID the cake, so this is not some advertisement for Cheryl.
