:Why We Danced:
The reason why I feel the need to write this is so that I can set the record straight!
|
Just last Saturday, I met this ex classmate of my hubby and I was showing off my new handphone with my dearest hubby's photo on the display. It was this picture I took of him being surrounded with the stuff toys we sleep with. His comments? "Wa1! Ta1 bei4 ni3 wan2 si3 liao2 la1!" Direct translation - "He's being played to death by you" |

Ok I wasn't angry or mad but more of being "shocked". So I asked why so?
Ah ... so the reason was because of the "special item" we did during our wedding dinner ... firstly, I was surprised that it was still fresh in his mind (geez it's almost what .. 8 months ago?) and secondly, not that surprised when he said it was out of my hubby's character to do something like that in public.
It's nothing INDECENT (ok except if you consider me showing off my fats as so). We performed a Middle Eastern Folk dance with a drummer - we kept it really really very secret. Only my father in law saw it when we were rehearsing (he popped by too early at our place) and another friend who saw it when we were doing a quick rehearsal after changing into our costumes. We wanted to keep it as a real surprise so as to maximise the "shock effect" (yes yes, by the large amounts of my fats again).
So how did my out-of-character hubby actually agree to do the dancing?
Nay, I didn't force him to do it ... Ok here goes the story ...
Once upon a time, in a room with dimmed lights and with hands gently massaging my back, my masseur (I was having a massage, what were you thinking!) mentioned that her sister were teaching bellydance despite being pregnant ... So I asked some questions and I got quite interested. I went for a workshop and signed up for the beginner bellydancing classes (www.bellydance.com.sg) and I approached my instructor - Yuki, about private classes so that I could dance at my wedding dinner (yes the idea was from me but WAIT! read on...) and she agreed to help me to choreograph simpler steps as I'm still grasping the basics of how to isolate body muscles (neck, shoulders, ribs, belly, hips, etc). I went for 2 lessons and even picked up a costume (YA PINK!) that Yuki has among her horde of costumes.
Then ... Yuki suggested why not involve my husband, and she's willing to teach us as a couple even though she does not accept male students. So I asked my dearest hubby what Yuki suggested and he replied "OK".
Are you shocked yet? So was I with this reply. I was prepared to go back and tell Yuki "See I told you so".
He was actually willing! So please remember I didn't threaten or bug or beg or persuade him to try.
We went for the first lesson at Yuki's place and boy, was he enjoying it ... he was trying out the moves in our place when I was just contented to watch TV ... All in all, we went for 3 classes, and the last one was with Amit, the drummer. He helped my hubby to improve some of his moves which the my hubby wasn't so comfortable with. He also was the one who loaned my hubby his costume.
Last rehearsal was up in the room, after we changed into our costumes and preparing to go down to the ballroom.
On the way we met some guests who were on the way to the washrooms, but they scurried back when they saw us walking towards the banquet.

Us just before entering the Ballroom. My tummy were all butterflies! |
Ah this is the initial part of the dance, whereby we are supposed to be courting. |
This is the part where I "show off" my womanly charms to him by shimmering around him. |
His turn to show off how macho he is! |

Towards the end of the dance, where we salute to all the guests as a form of respect and gratitude for attending the dinner. |
Tadah! The end where the guy gets the girl bit, in simple terms. |
This pink hipscarf is not part of the costume, but a gift from my Aunty Melissa. She actually had to search all over the markets in Turkey just to find this pink hipscarf with gold coins! |
Amit, drumming like mad and enjoying himself while laughing at us secretly. |
And ... well for those who didn't know ... the dance wasn't "perfect" - I goofed up and missed some steps (4 beats to be exact) but luckily my hubby kept perfect timing and I followed him and we managed to catch up with the correct part of the music again ...
And as my hubby said during his wedding speech (by the way, I wrote it while he was being fussed on by the makeup artist):
"I hope you enjoyed the special item we have prepared for you."
We certainly did.
Special Thanks to:
Yuki for so patiently guiding our steps.
Amit for patiently drumming while we messed our steps AGAIN.
Aunty Melissa for her lovely pink hip scarf, all the way from Turkey.
